The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed the great Francis Ford Coppola, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo (the author who wrote the best-selling 1969 novel the film is based on). The film stars Hollywood legends including Marlon Brandon, Al Pacino, James Caan, Diane Keaton, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, and Sterling Hayden, and follows the lives of Vito and Michael Corleone.

The Godfather was the highest-grossing film of 1972, and for many years it was the highest-grossing film ever made. It won Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 45th Academy Awards, won Marlon Brando the Best Actor award, and resulted in seven other Oscar nominations. A landmark of the gangster film genre and regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made, The Godfather is ranked the second-greatest film in American cinema by the American Film Institute (second only to Citizen Kane). The film's sequels The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III are also considered some the greatest films ever made.
